CONCERTO WINNERS & COMPOSERS

Pablo

Pablo Miranda-Delgado
Stringed Bass – Grassfield Concerto Winner
Since 6th-grade, Pablo has immersed himself in playing bass, nurturing his talent and passion for the past 7 years. During the latter half of his 10th grade, he began studying the Dragonetti. Presently, he holds the position of Principal bass in the Grassfield Chamber Orchestra.

In the upcoming fall, Pablo will be continuing his journey at Old Dominion University, where he will pursue a degree in music education.

Robert Parsons
Robert Parsons
French Horn – Grassfield Concerto Winner
Robert’s journey into the world of music started in the sixth grade at Hickory Middle School, where he initially wielded the trumpet before transitioning to the French horn starting in seventh grade. Since his sophomore year in high school, Robert has dedicated his studies to mastering the Richard Strauss 1 Horn Concerto, immersing himself in its captivating compositions.

After graduation, Robert will start his adventure at Old Dominion University, where he will pursue a degree in Accounting.

Waylen Biancardi
Composer, Cellist, Pianist
Waylen Biancardi boasts a musical career spanning more than seven years, during which he honed his skills as both a cellist and a pianist. Immersed in a world of harmonies and melodies, music became an integral part of Waylen’s life. It was in the eighth grade that Waylen’s interest in composition and music writing took flight, fueling a profound passion for exploring the depths of music theory. This year, an exciting collaboration unfolded between Waylen and his talented peer, Colin DeGuzman, as they embarked on an arrangement of Sublime’s “Santeria.” Eagerly anticipating the performance by their fellow classmates, Waylen and Colin are thrilled to witness their musical creation come to life on stage.

Colin DeGuzman
Composer, Violin

Colin DeGuzman, a seventeen-year-old senior, has been wielding the violin since his fifth-grade days and has remained an integral part of the Grassfield Orchestra throughout his four years of high school. As he prepares to embark on his journey at George Mason University in the upcoming fall, Colin has set his sights on pursuing a major in mathematics while also delving into the realm of computer science as a minor.

Colin’s composition expedition began during his middle school years, and it was during his regular piano lessons that he unwittingly absorbed the intricacies of music theory. He continues to craft original classical compositions, even contemplating sharing some of his works with Mr. V and the talented group of musicians slated for next year’s ensemble—provided they don’t prove too challenging!

Freshman Orchestra

Our Freshman Orchestra consists of 9th graders from 7 middle schools located all around Chesapeake Public Schools. Freshman Orchestra is the starting place of nearly all students in the program and is where Mr. V lays foundations for the following 3 years for students going into both the concert and chamber orchestras.

Concert Orchestra

120 students strong, the Concert Orchestra is the largest performing group in the Grassfield Program. Concert is a non-audition group and is where freshman not interested in Chamber are placed automatically. Despite its size, Concert Orchestra consistently scores with superiors at assessments.

Chamber Orchestra

The Chamber Orchestra is the audition only group that performs collegiate level music. Consistently receiving superiors at assessment, Chamber has musicians aspiring to continue their studies throughout college. In 2021 Chamber was chosen to play in a demonstration for the VMEA conference in Norfolk.
